About This Register

Why the masthead says logbook

Because a logbook is a dated record of a state of affairs, kept so that an earlier entry can be compared with a later one. That is exactly what this is.

It is not a diary of journeys, and nothing here is written in the first person. Each entry carries the year a name was fixed and the year this register last checked it, which is what makes the collection a log rather than an essay collection. Where the record runs out, the entry says so, and that admission is dated too.

The word in the domain is also the name of a tree, and readers will notice. Nothing on this site is about that tree: not in the writing, not in the frames, not in the mark. A publication named after a plant that then decorates itself with the plant is telling you it had no better idea.

What this register is for

Almost nothing in this city is named for what it is. So a visitor reading the map is reading a record of arrivals: a crossing phrase in a Muskogean language, Spanish saints worn down by English speakers, a territorial governor who never came, a railroad's own staff, and developers borrowing from Venice and from northern cities.

Sorting names by who did the naming rather than by date or alphabet turns that from trivia into something a reader can use on any street in the county. That is the whole editorial idea, and the catalogue is where it lives.

Why it recommends nothing

Because the moment a register starts telling readers where to eat, it acquires an interest in what it writes about, and every entry afterwards has to be read with that in mind.

So there are no recommendations anywhere on this site, no rankings, no lists of things to see, and no business of any kind is named on any page. The districts in the catalogue are places where people live and work. What this publication has to say about them is where their names came from.

Who writes it

Delia Marchetti writes and edits this register from Jacksonville. Her method is unglamorous and it is the reason the site has the shape it does: find the document, note what it actually says, note the date, and print the gap when there is no document.

She came to the subject through a National Register nomination. Looking up a district out of ordinary curiosity, she found that the federal document certifying its importance also stated, plainly, that building records did not support the story the neighborhood told about its own houses. That a public document could contradict local legend, and that almost nobody reads it, turned out to be the whole subject. That nomination is the backbone of the Riverside entry.

She is not an archivist, a surveyor or a historian by training, and this register is not scholarship. It is a careful reading with the sources named, so that a reader never has to take her word for anything. Checking a name is the page that makes that possible.

Independence

Rowan Logbook LLC is independent of every airline, airport, booking platform, travel agency, hotel, preservation society, historical commission, museum, and public body at any level. It holds no license, permit, appointment or accreditation from any of them, has never applied for one, and receives nothing from any of them. Nothing on this site has been shown to any of them before a reader saw it.
